Extra Info on Ear Tags

What do you all put on your ear tags, other than the ID? And what is your ID numbering system?

I have been putting month of birth up in the tapered part of the tag, DAM# in fine print in the lower part. My numbering system is YYNN, where YY is year of birth, and NN is a sequential number starting at 01.

I use letters for the year (this year is A for me) and then sequential numbers for order of birth. I used to put my phone number on the lower part it was helpful to have people identify them when they were out. I now just put my brand on the top part then the year/number big in the center and dams number/name on the lower part of the tag small.

we do a birth month and year with the dam number above it on the front and our brand on the back. we also use the metal ear tags that clip on like hog rings that have our name and a sequential number so we can correctly replace lost ear tags, but that never happens does it. and yes we also burn our brand on their hip.

Stock cows and ewes get the same system, a number. Everything born in 2012, will have a 200-299 number tag next year 300's. This is for replacement heifers and ewe lambs. Offspring are number the same as the dam. I double tag all replacement stock I keep and brand cows and yearlings. If I can see the tag number I know how old the critter is without looking in a book. the rest of records are kept on paper.
