Smart heifer!

Tonight was her 5th milking, and she was the first cow in the parlor!

It's funny how quickly they go from, "What is that crazy human doing down there? OMG, she's TOUCHING MY UDDER! Aaaiiiiieeeeee!" <stomp> <stomp> <stomp> <kick>

to, "Hurry up and milk me already!"

More like, "Hurry up and give me my grain already", but yeah.
It is pretty interesting to see where they will slot themselves into the milkstring.
I like it when the goosey heifers aren't ALL in the very last set.

The ones who line up to be in the first set end up being big old pushy cows who make a LOT of milk, usually.

Gotta love those FF girls though. They keep you on your toes.

Yes, we had 2 fresh heifers come in Monday night. The other is a bit of a slow learner ... she's still in the last group, although it no longer takes 2 of us to shoehorn her into the parlor!

She has been christened "Dumbalina."

'Dumbalina' is a very charitable name by my standards.

I had a heifer this spring that was a pre-me baby when born, was a pest of a calf, grew up and was bred last year. And came in this spring like someone had stolen her brain, so wanted nothing to do with those humans that raised me. But she has now settled in to be a nice little cow, and has to have the same spot in the barn everyday. Don`t ya just love them heifers. > Thanks Marc

Tonight when I went out to bring in the cows, I noticed a heifer laying in the middle of the alley instead of in a freestall ... thought to myself, "Bet I know who THAT is!"

Sure enough ... Dumbalina!

I bought a Sannen doe goat in milk about a month ago. For the first week I had to corner her in the barn to milk her at 7:00 every night. Now at 5:00 every evening she is standing on the milking stand staring at the door of the house.............

Well, last night she was laying half in, and half out, of a freestall. I guess she's making progress ... !

Man I hate those day/weeks of initial stanchion training! Gotta love those that give resistance. I've actually had some high-headed ones that take a week or two to train and the only time I can put my hands on them is after they're standing on the stand. From the time I turn them loose a light switches and they think I'm the boogie man until next milking time when their "I need feed" instinct kicks in.
