Buying week old dairy calves outa Wisc

When I was yoiung, in the late 60s, I bought 10 holstein dairy calves out of an ad in the back of Successful Farming. They came from Wisc. Paid $100ea for them. Guy came to St Joe Mo in a grain truck with stock racks and full of calves. I had my 46 Chevy with stock racks on and it was raining. I took 10 home, and they all thrived
Question is, do they still do that sorta thing anymore? If they do, what kinda price are they getting for them nowadays.?

Just look on craigslist, any of the I will be at x place Saturday ads will shipped in calves. I've looked at the adds and figured most of the dairy calves listed were shipped or gathered up calves. Most of them would come out of Texas today.

Dairy cows are so scarce here that youll never see a full blooded milk cow. They always got some beef in their line. Most people who want milk here just rope and snub a beef cow and teach her to stand for milking. Ive had the displeasure of climbing down to the underside of a white face to milk her. Gentle as could be.,

I go to the dairy and paid $10 for 3-day old jersey calves this year. The first year we were here, there was a guy with a truck that I bought 1 jersey calf from - it was $25 for him.

You can get wet dairy bulls by the dozens any day of the week here. SammyD is right on with the prices. It's ugly.

Heifer calves are always higher here, regardless of breed.

Here in Amish country Ohio......there are several weekly auctions......Monday is Sugarcreek, Tuesday is Farmerstown, Wednesday is Mount Hope, and Thursday is Kidron (right across the street from Lehman's Hardware). I think that Kidron is the biggest, but I seem to get the best prices for my goats at Mount Hope.

There are calves all the time.....not sure what the prices for heifers are at the moment.

It would ONLY be a 12-14 hour drive each way for you, Bill.

Seriously, they were $100 back in the sixties? How sad they have come down sooo much. $100 back then was a LOT more than it is now.
