Yep...we actually have 2 black ones at the moment. This one is 13 yo, and then one of her granddaughters that is almost 5 yo.

Highlands, at least ours anyways (we like the more traditionally sized ones), the cows usually run between 1100-1300 pounds on average. Bulls average between 1300-1800 pounds. They take a bit longer to grow out, 2 to 3 years compared to other beef breeds where 18 mo to 2 years is more the normal.

Highlands typically throw small calves, about 40-50 pounds, and the cows are known for calving regularly up through their upper teens and into their twenties. Temperament wise, they tend to be pretty mellow animals....half of ours love getting combed out and such. I can brush out the current bull (and a couple of his predecessors were the same way) completely....even in his more personal area (especially important in the fall...we have cockleburrs in some sections of the pasture that havent managed to get rid of yet).

Got started with Highlands back in 2003....they're so cute they are addicting.

You don't seem to see black very often. We have a cow and a bull that are black, but their parents weren't. One had red brindle parents and the bulls were red and dirt brown. Who knows why that color pops up?

We have a few adults highlands for sale also if any one is interested. Including a pair of twin minis.

Congratulations!

He looks like he's dun. The black Highlands are usually born looking orange/red, and as the baby coat comes out the black replaces it.

We have both Dexters and Highlands, and I wanted some more Highlands and my wife wanted more Dexters. So one day I casually mentioned that Highlands come in 7 colors. We quickly had all 7, and I think my wife is still searching for the 8th different color!

Of course that didn't stop her from getting more Dexters too

10 colors

1-blond
2-black
3-white
4-silver
5-red
6-brown (or tan)
7-chocolate
8-red brindle
9-dirt
10-true grey (editing to add, I would call that calf true grey) I don't know what dun means

I don't know the 'correct' color terminology, but at one point or another, we have owned all these colors.
