I had two first-timers this year. They both did well. One "forgot" to take the calf with her to the shade with all the other moms and calves the first day. I carried him up to her, we had a little talk, and she hasn't forgotten him since.

Hope your girl does well! Pictures?

myersfarm, yes, mine take a day or so before they join the others, but this heifer left her baby out in the HOT sun when he was 12 hours old, so I had to read her the riot act. All is well.

Hope Rocktown's heifer read the textbook!

She didn't read the book I'm afraid to say.

We lost the calf. I called the vet but by the time he got here the calf was gone. The calf was in position...so we really are not sure what happened...the vet said this being her first she was tired and maybe didn't know what was happening. I just have to take that answer and move on.

Thanks.

Oh no, Rocktown Gal! I'm so sorry to read this. I've heard that sometimes they get tired and stop pushing. Well, it happens to the best of us, sorry to say, not a good way to start the week, but I hope your heifer is okay at any rate. Was the calf stillborn on its own or did it have to be pulled?

The vet had to pull it. She did help by pushing some. Was given two shots one for pain the other for helping with the afterbirth. Just came back from checking on her and she looks okay. The afterbirth that was out is gone so she has taken care of that part.

Sorry it happened. It stinks to lose a calf.

So you know that sometimes it all comes together and other times, it just stinks! I know how you feel. Will you give her another chance?

Dang it!! So sorry~ was the calf too big? I lost one of my best milkers last year and it was depressing...I was weepy for a week and still get sad thinking of my Adele. Sigh. Hugs to you!

No calf wasn't too big. I say it was around 70 lbs. I think just a first timer she was confused.
