little bit of snotty eyes
Mini Coop came in with health certificate and bright eyed and bushy tailed last Tues, she was right at rain but then by Thurs. had white goop in the corners of her eyes, eating fine, still bright, figured she was adjusting to local allergies, but now my other heifer who has never had a problem is goopy as well with a little dry cough and rubbing her eyes madly (now everyone was moving yesterday as well), sprayed both of them with pink eye spray just to be safe and gave both a shot of LA-200 as directed by the feed store lady, (that was fun, why are cows convinced a half inch needle will kill them??!!) they are both eating well and such, but MC has started walking with an odd little hitch in her rear ankles..does not seem to be in pain, just puts the toe down first they the heel so her little ankles pop, did not notice that when she first arrived..should I call the vet? thoughts? it was pronounced after our struggles with the shot this morning...

The walking funny has me worried. I've never seen founder in cattle before, but we did have a horse prone to founder once and she'd walk ... well... funny. When she could. Vets can inject something to slow down the inflamation if that's what it is - so you might want to have her looked at.
When I had her, I was only giving her a couple of handfuls of sweet feed per day during the month before she left. (And my hands are pretty small.) Before that, she was getting hay only. Are you doing too much rich feed, maybe? Both Lowlines and Dexters do quite well on hay alone, not like the dairy breeds you have already. You might need to feed her less.

I think the chondro carrier Dexters do have a funny way of moving (noticeable in hind feet) that is different from the non-chondro Dexters. I've noticed it in some of ours. I wouldn't worry about it unless there is a pronounced change or unless it's more apparent in one leg than the other.

This is Mini Coop's sire now after 4 years with us and eating only grass and hay.
Cooper doesn't need grain. It's just candy.

Yeah, Maria, I'd have to agree with you, even though Cooper would not! He's gonna run out of skin! LOL!
Do you have a photo of Mini Cooper's dam?

Hi Maria, am cutting her back, even tho she was just getting a taste I think she she was stealing from Annabelle who gets quite a bit...she is not lame or foundered though, no heat or pain, I think GS must be right that Dexter gene, have looked a few pictures of the ones with the "tiny" gene and I just noticed she stands more "upright" on her hindlegs than AB just from the way she is built, and I think it is just walking down hill that she has a little wiggle to her walk I am not used to it is all...she is dry in the eyes and sassy this afternoon, vet says I did what he would have done (he thought both getting it was suspicious and better to be safe than sorry) thanks for the picture of her Daddy, handsome, will put in her "album". All seems to be forgiven, she wandered up when I got home from work and seems to not hold a grudge.

I took these this evening:

Her name is Storm and she might be 1/4 mini Jersey. The person I bought her mother from wasn't sure who the sire was, but said that if the calf was born black, her sire was probably half mini Jersey. Storm is 40 inches at the hip.
I tried to measure Charley (the sire) this evening, but he wasn't in a mood to stand still and I could only approximate- he's maybe 47 or 48 inches at the hip. Charley is 3/4 registered Lowline Angus with the other parts being 1/8 unspecified, and 1/8 Pinzgauer.

Maria, Storm is a pretty little cow, nice udder, resembles a Dexter in many ways. Was Mini Cooper her first calf with Charley? Sorry for all the questions, just curious if all her calves are as small as Cooper.

Storm ought to resemble a Dexter! Her mother was a registerable red shortlegged Dexter and the father was either a full Dexter or that made up breed "Belmont" which is half Dexter half mini Jersey. So she's at least 3/4 and possibly full Dexter, if anyone is keeping score.
Storm has had 3 calves by Charley so far. The first was normal in size. The second was Mini Cooper. This year's calf is growing well and will probably be normal in size.

Maria, this is why I said she resembles a Dexter.
