Lost hair at top of tail.

I did a search on "hair loss" on this site but not sure I have my answer. Any chance this can be caused during mating? I just bought a young bull 10-14 days ago. This patch was suddenly gone. I didn't notice it yesterday, anyway. Looks like there could be some abrasion but no scaling skin or actual open areas. I took a pic but can't figure out how to get it posted here.

We have had cows that were in a good heat come in the barn for milking and the top of the pin bones and the tail head would be rubbed so raw they would be bleeding.

Is it the bull losing hair or a cow? If its the cow, chances are that the bull is your culprit.

If its a concern to you, take some "seven dust" and sprinkle along the animals back. If its a bug 7 will usually take care of it.
Generic anticeptic mouth wash may also help if its a mite or lice.

Thanks, everyone. Its the cow with the problem. A little more hair was off by the end of the day yesterday. I'm going to keep my eye on it today. May try the seven dust. May be rain rot from my research and my daughter who is at Ohio state in animal science. We'll see.

It sounds like lice to me, common this time of year. Have you observed the cow scratching herself on a tree or the bale feeder? I have never heard of using Sevin dust on cattle. Usually a pour-on dewormer takes care of lice, and you may need only to place a phone call to your vet for advice on what to use. Just my two cents.
