Shares of steers

Anyone have luck selling shares of steers to local folks?

We're looking to sell our steers as quarters. Curious if anyone else has done it.

Because of Michigan's laws, there aren't a lot of places where you can buy locally grown beef. So, buying a share is the only legal way.
I'd suggest you not sell quarters. Seems to work out better to just sell 4 people one steer. That way everyone gets about the same cuts. Otherwise, you have to figure how you are going to price the cheaper front quarters. Price is figured per pound, hanging weight at the butcher. Due to bones and trimming, their take home weight will be less.
You can't afford to have someone back out at the last minute, so collect a $50 deposit way up front.

I sell half of halves (like haypoint said, not quarters) and halves. I deliver in the fall to the butcher, and they are responsible for butchering costs (including the kill) plus my price per hanging lb. Works well here, and the only way I can legally sell them other then the auction barn.

When selling quarters, it usually isn't front or rear. That would be like front or rear half. Here a quarter is a half divided equally with front and rear cuts. It is easiest to do the cut card for the customer and have the processor divide it into 4 equal portions. Just tell them when to pick it up and pay the processor. Here the processor taxes it a little ($10-20) for the extra work, but is happy to do it. Blaine
