new cow not letting down?

Hi all, we are new at milk cows but we've had goats for a while. We got a 3 year old Jersey yesterday. She seems pretty stressed about her change in scenery. She doesn't seem to be letting down for us. We are also inexperienced at cow milking. I've been milking goats for several years and it just feels like no let down.

Does this seem like a likely explanation? Or is it just our inexperience. Thanks, Russ

Russ, she may very well be holding her milk back. If your hand milking and she was use to being milk by machine, it sure could be. If she came from a big herd, and now she is new kid in town, it sure could be. Cows are creatures of habit, they love a dull routine. They like things the same day after day, so if you have changed her world around she may very well be holding back. Try massaging her udder longer, and get done milking as quick as you can. If you have to you can give a shot of oxcetocine (SP) to help let her milk down. It has been awhile since I have had to use any so someone chime in here with the amount, or call your vet and ask him how much. > Thanks Marc

It is going to take a few days for you all to get used to eachother.
I bet it will go better tomorrow. They can only hold it in for so long.

My guess is that within a week you will all come to an understanding.
Be patieint and keep at it.
She will come around.

She's stressed from the move and leaving her old friends behind. It may take a few days for her to relax and get used to her new routine. It should get better in a day or two. If she's friendly it would probably help to hang around her, feed her and get her used to you.
