Hide processing

We run Belted Galloway cattle and have our first one being butchered at the end of February. They have very unique hides and we want to preserve them when processed and have them cured/tanned with hair on to be used as rugs, wall hangings or something else.

Does anyone know of someone in the Southern Tier of NY area that offers these services?

Thank you in advance for any responses.

Bruce

Check with the nearest taxidermist. Many taxidermist contract their hides to be tanned. A professionally done hide by an expert will last years and not shed hair. A whole deer hide costs me $45 if I patiently wait and include my hide in with the taxidermist's shipment. I cannot include the hide processor's name/location as the taxidermist said it took him a long time to make the connection and the source is already overbooked. The turnaround time already exceeds 4 months and it throws the taxidermist further behind.

This place is in the southern tier. Of Idaho. Looks like a cow hide runs a bit over $300.

Be careful with who you use. We have Scottish Highlands and there are only a few in the country that have the ability to do it correctly.

For the Highlands at least (I assume the Belted Galloways are similar) it is also more expensive than a regular hide. A full size cow can be as high as $600.00

Ask your processor who he recommends. I'm sure you're not the first person to want their hide tanned.

Deer hair won't stay on the hide for long. It'll slough off eventually. They do make good clothing though.

I'm going through a similar dilema with our Highlands. The processor also wants $35 if I get the hide back, as they sell them.

I found a place called http://www.thetanneryinc.com/forums/ . They are about $600 for a Highland hide. I suppose you could try it yourself, but I don't want a crusty, stiff hide.

@ Lakeport - who do you use for your Highlands?

Brooks, These are two places, but they're close to me in Michigan and I can drop off and pick up, which can be helpful at times.

Brooks,

To add to the "local" comment I made in the prior post.
The more local to you the better if your processor doesn't want to do the fleshing and salting. We prefer to have the tannery do the fleshing and salting, so the hide just has to be frozen. It adds about $100.00.

Figure on about 13 to 15 dollars per square foot. Average is 35-40 sq. ft.
Shoulder mount is about $1000.00 if you are interested in that too.

Bucks Fur outfitters inQuakertown , Penn. did a sheepskin for a friend. $50. (215) 536-6614 Don't know what they charge for cattle hides, but they did a great job on the sheepskin.
