Friends - Cattle

Norman my pet steer and Duece my daughters elderly dressage horse have been friends for years. Duece is actually Norman's second oldest friend, the pony he was raised with for four years went back to his owner, Norman stopped eating and was depressed for several days. You can't tell me cows are not sensitive creatures, at least those hand raised as pets certainly are!

great pic! it makes me smile.
Just out of curiosity, how come Norman has a ring? Just for extra "protection" when leading him, or is he jerky/pushy when on the lead? My step dad had steers of all sorts (trained to yoke) and never had rings in. just curious, thats all. I love his face....looks like he is grinning with his teeth showing. LOL

He was a bull until he was almost four; and while he didn't have a mean bone in his body, he also was bottle raised and no respect for personal space, plus I had never laid a hand on him in anger and when he didn't want to go somewhere, he could just plant his feet and not move, or drag me about. I hook the leadshank to the ring, but run it through the halter, so the only time it stings is if he gets cranky...I had him made into a steer because I live in a neighborhood and thought that was a better choice liablility wise...and didn't need a bull, although he never turned I heard they could...

makes sense, safety is our number one priority! and a fella that size, when they start to act silly, doesnt take long for a human to get run down. I LOL now, but been there, done that with my horses.
