OOOOOOOOh.....thinking baby soon!!

Ok all. I am so excited and so nervous. My elenore is due to calve on Jan 8 but has been bagging up for about a week and a half and now has a really relaxed tail head, is walking around with her tail cocked up, has some stringy stuff hanging down and isn't wanting to eat her grain. Am I getting too ahead of myself or do you think I am on the right track here? I am thinking soon. I hope so cause I went ahead and gave her a tube of the Cal-Mag-Co stuff. She did not like that by the way. LOL!

Well......I was right!!! Yep...her udder made me cringe as I had breast fed and remember that feeling. My mom said that the dairy farmer we bought these cows from said that generally speaking, when a cow goes early it is a heifer and a bull goes over. She was 8 days early and.....tah dah.....BULL!!! I had it all planned. My cows name starts with an E and so the HEIFER was going to be either Eve or Eloise. Anybody wanna guess the name of my little healthy BULL calf??

Bummer. LOL!

Congratulations! You should be happy that the calf arrived safely and, with luck, is healthy. That's the most important thing, not the gender.

Congratulations on your fresh cow and healthy little bull.
I would name him Eddy-bull. Get it, edible? LOL Eddy for short.

LOL! Oh I have said I would take a healthy bull over a dead heifer any day. No, I didn't mean it was a bummer...that is what I named him cause I just knew HE would be a SHE cause HE was early!! LOL!
LOL! Liked that one gone....Eddy-Bull. LOL! But he's sweet and friendly and somehow Bummer just fits him. He does like attention. I milked her out. I got 2 gallons out and that took most all out of the front two quarters and most out of the rears but I wanted him to try nursing. I am going to try letting him nurse and then get another to bottle feed. I fed him a quart by bottle just to ensure he ate and all. Gave her about a total of 8 gallons of warm water with a total of 1qt of molasses in there and she sucked that down quick. Loved it. I thought it stunk! LOL! Now just need to get that other tube of Cal-Mag-Co down her. LOL! That was sure interesting the first time and now she'll be onto me! LOL!

I like Bummer. Some of the best names are the ones that come to you at the moment. We have a heifer Jersey calf we had last spring and I had all kinds of names picked out, but when we went out there she was turning around in circles. Round and round. A friend that came to check her said she looked dizzy and Dizzy has been her name ever since.

Yep. Sometimes those names just come and fit better than any name you had planned. Like, I had Eve, Eloise and didn't even think about boy but when I saw him, soaking wet, laying in mud and such in the dark I thought....man...bummer. LOL! For him and me both cause there was a warm, dry barn just at the top of the hill and here he was in the mud and gunk. LOL!

Congrats on a healthy calf and uneventful delivery. The first calf born here was 10 days late. I was positive it would be a bull based on all the old farmers tales. That was a couple years ago. I'm milking her now.

Get another bottle of calcium in her and see if she'll drink warm molasses water. The sooner you can get the calcium in her the better. Also, stock up on the CMPK bottles because you might need to dose her again after the vet leaves. Hopefully the vet will set you up with what you need.

He did get me set up. He said she has enough stuff in her to float a boat and she is actually standing now but he said she's as close to death as he's ever had one. I know she scared me and still has me a little.

She is alive and up but not out of the woods I don't think. I put a bit of detail in the other post but she is highly medicated and up....still very shaky and has me worried.
