Looking for a Milk Cow in Michigan

Hello,

We have decided to add a Cow to our Menagerie of animals :-) I do have experience with milking and handling cows.

Looking for a milk cow, either in milk or due to freshen within the next few months.

Don't need anything special, just something friendly and easy to handle. Let me know if you are looking to sell a milk cow who would enjoy a huge pasture, great hay, company of goats, and a warm barn for cold nights. Thanks!

Put an ad on Craigslist. You want one that is able to be hand milked if you don't have equipment. Sometimes an older cow is available from local dairy farms, and they would be able to tell you if they thought she could be hand milked. Maybe try going thru the motions of milking by hand, see if she will stand or try to kick.

Older cow may have a more stretched udder, so more prone to teat damage with other cattle in a barnyard herd. Farmers sell them off to avoid this problem. Not such an issue when kept in a home farm setting. Stop at a dairy farm and ask if they sell older cows.

You will want good fences, to be sure she stays home. I do see a number of cows offered now and again, in searches on Craigslist. If you have a trailer, you can buy from anywhere. Also check the Indiana area, often find Amish cows that are used to hand milking down there. Or check their free newspaper, has advertising for all kinds of animals, found at grocery locations. Not sure where in MI you are, but there are cows to find if you hunt.

How far do you want to go? I have a friend who's selling his 3 y/o Jersey that calved 3 months ago ( I think...). She's been hand milked and machine milked. He has three cows in milk and is swimming in it! I think he's asking $1500 and he's in Virginia, near Blacksburg/Radford

If you can wait until June, I have a two and half year old Jersey cow who fits your order, born here, mothers here. Due end of May 2012. Confirmed pregnant. Very tame, easy milker, giving 3 gals a day eight months into first lactation, mother gives up to 10 gals a day on pasture. I want the calf from this breeding: "200 JE 314 Hollylane Lilibet's LEGACY, VG". She had a beautiful heifer calf from him last April and I'm hoping for another one.

I am also in West Michigan, and looking for a nice family milk cow with good confirmation, no horns, good producer. Hoping for a Brown Swiss or Guernsey.

We have experience with cows - actually just sold our Jersey milk cow who was giving 7 gal. per day at her peak. Would like another milker who also has excellent production.

We're willing to drive into Indiana, Ohio areas.
Thanks,
Jenna

I got my Bella from an Amish fellow near Camden, MI. His cows were milked by machine or hand. I can give you a phone number if that's not too far. Guernsey.

I am looking for a pure Guernsey to go with my half Guernsey cow "Bella". Can I have the phone number too? I don't want another cow until spring, but want to put things in order, so I will be ready to get another cow when I am ready. Thanks!

I just heard from a lady in W Michigan who is going through tough times right now. She is having to sell her two Guernsey cows. I'm trying to get a contact number. She also has a 7 month old heifer.

The age range of the heifer and the area seems familiar. What is the farm name? I am in West Michigan too.

I have seen the womans cows that Judy mentioned. She takes good care of them and have been in good health. I have also tasted the cows milk and it was fantastic!
