beginning milking a hiefer

Anybody have any advise on "training" a new heifer for hand milking?

I would start by halter training her. There are several proven methods, but the one we used with a flighty heifer was to tie a short rope to her halter. She stepped on the rope and learned to give with the pull. This only took two or three days, but is best accomplished in a small area with close supervision.
Once your heifer learns to lead, you can tie her up while she is eating and get her used to your touch. From touch, you start stroking her and brushing her. She will learn that human contact can be pleasurable. From brushing her back and sides, you can move to brushing her belly and then move on to rubbing her udder. Patience and perseverance are very important. One day she may seem very settled and the next she may act up, just be patient and she will finally settle down.

I would go to www.real-food.com

They have a whole section of information on this subject. Great folks on the forum with YEARS of milking knowledge.
