Trampled
Had a friend get kicked by a cow today, but I don't understand why other cows would run to him while he was down and trample him twice. From what I was told, after he went down from the initial kick, the other cows ran to him trampled him, went to a corner of fencing, turned around and ran back and trampled him again.
Why would they do this?

Because he went down. I reckon that I've been kicked by a thousand cows, but never saw any reason to go down.
When a cow sees a threat neutralized they go for the kill.

So kind of like when a chicken is injured, the others try to kill it?

Yeah, or when a strange dog runs through the herd. Something different, unexpected, strange.

So sorry to hear about your friend.
Was this his own cattle? How large was the herd?

Sorry to hear this happened.
Cows may not recognize a person who is suddenly on the ground and might, in fact, view him as a predator.
I hope that you friend will be okay!

Hope he is all right, seems like a lot of animals do that, kick'em while they are down. Many times when the cows are in tie stalls one will try to get up and if the one next door is already up sometimes they take a cheap shot with thier heads.

It sounds to me like the calves were panicky and were not deliberately "attacking" him. They were simply running from one corner of the pen and back again and he was in their path. Many times I have been run over in a similar situation, if you can't get up and get out of the path, things can get serious real fast.

sometime cows are just stupid! Couple of weeks ago was burning brush in the field, sat down to watch the fire from a distance and 1 of the 2 mth old steers laid down next to me and kept brushing his head in my lap till I scratched his ears. Couple of the others came over and breathed heavy in my ear. Rather have a overly tame groub than rouwdies. Sorry th hear about this happening, best wishes for your friend.

I have a friend in ICU right now that was kicked by a cow. The kick didn't send him, it was a blood clot thamt formed and came loose a week later that went to his lugs.

Because that's what cattle do, is why.
I sure hope your friend is OK.
No matter how tame cattle are, they are still cattle and they are always going to act like cattle. They have to be treated with respect and you must stay alert around them.

Only thing that I've heard is, he's awake now but has some numbness in his arms and legs.

Only time I have had it happen. Had about a three-year old Angus bull. He would come up from the back field to be fed a corn treat. He become 'bucket crazy', put me down and rolled me until I was near the gate. Next day happened to be sale date at the livestock auction. He had wheels put under him.
Never, ever, fully trust a cow and especially a bull.
