Butcher Steers

Three nice photos of my two freezer bound steers. Both bought for $50 each, both raised on goats milk. Both fed small amounts of grain till six months old, grass/hay fed until my freezer becomes low. Grain/hay/grass fed for 45 days and off to the slaughter house @ 18 months old. Normal yield into the freezer, 46-50% depending on age. The larger steer is 14 months old, the smaller one is 6 months old. Enjoy the photos...Topside

What does the six month old weigh roughly? I am going to do that with Jersey steers but don't want to wait that long on the first one.

Waiting maximizes yield & taste, 18 months is the minimum. Don't pick a Jersey if you looking for quick growth....Topside

I knew that a Jersey is slow growing, I was thinking about slaughter @ 9 months maybe?
I don't need much meat myself.

That 14 m.o. is growing out nicely. Hope he makes for some good steaks for you.

Thanks for the photo. I'll be butchering an 18 month old next month and it helps me to compare your's with mine. I DO think the young one is too cute to butcher and should be made into a pet. ;-) What is the black/white speckled one in the background?

Thanks Karin, we do our best.
The speckled one is my dairy goat buck, he lives with the steers during the winter months....Topside.
