Best way to dry up?

I am going to need to dry my jersey girl up by November 8 (pending a good vet visit next week that says that she's truly bred but she does look it) and I am not sure the best way to go about it. She is giving 6qts twice a day right now. She is in a wooded lot (3 acres or 4 maybe) with an alfalfa round bale (that I am very disappointed with the quality) and water of course. She is getting grain at milking with minerals free choice. What should I do? Thanks!

Can`t believe no body has answered your question, first start off by cutting back the grain intake. Then go to once a day milking then after about a week or two go to everyother day, then after a week of this just stop milking her. Then just keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn`t get mastitis while dry. Also as I have said many times on here before just give your cow grass hay while dry, less chance of milk fever when they freshen. > Thanks Marc

When I want to dry up a cow I milk her then put in a lot with water and low quality forage not real bad stuff but lower than she was eating and skip the next milking . After she has skipped the one milking the next milking I milk her out and dry cow treat and send to the dry lot or a non milking forage with no grain . After a week she than can be put on a dry cow ration to start for the next lactation . This is how we dry up cows that are giving more than a hundred lb a day with no mastitis.

we usually went from twice a day to once a day for a couple of days then stopped.
we didn't really feed any grain so that wasn't an issue.
