They earned their money today.....
I took 4 of my holstein steers into the auction house today. They have a catwalk overhead that you can walk on to look down at all the animals there. I was up there looking to see how many holsteins there actually were when I noticed some people running below. I went over to that area and this very large and very angry black heifer was running after these two guys who finally made it up over a gate. That heifer was after them to actually hurt them. She plowed through their gates which were at least 6' tall and solid steel. She hit them hard enough that their latches released. It was something. Some poor goats about got creamed several times and one of the workers got smashed hard between 2 gates. By the time she was done with her damage she had a bloody nose and her tongue was hanging out and she was still trying to whoop the workers.....for some reason she didn't sell as high as the others. CRAZY COW!

I imagine that one will end up in a can of chili.

Probably some farmer that was being chased around by her all the time. He figured he had had enough close calls, and time to get rid of the problem.
I certainly hope he told the auction people when he unloaded her that she was nasty. I'm sure most of the workers are already cautious of any animal they have - new surroundings and you never know what they might do - but I'm sure they get taken by surprise every now and then too.
And if the farmer did tell them she was nasty, I hope they remarked about it when auctioning her. If somebody buys her thinking she would make a good addition to their farm, they will be sadly mistaken.
The best thing the farmer could have done was just butcher her and sell her as burger and steaks.

Can of chili for sure. There was no need of mentioning how nasty she was....it was obvious! LOL! She charged into the ring with blood running from her nose, tongue hanging out and charging at anyone she eyed in particular in the ring or out in the bleachers. Fortunately the arena is enclosed with concrete and then steel cable above it. Nasty nasty cow. She shoooo was perdy though! LOL!

Oh my, that brings back memories! When I was a kid, our neighbour bought a heifer at auction. First nice spring day, he let the cows out and she went through the fence. His daughter and I saddled up our horses and tried to round up the heifer, but she was coming after us with evil intent (and horns! ). I think they ended up shooting her - there was a good reason she was at the auction!

Other considerations, though not excuses for a mean disposition: Were they using Hot Shots? Had she just had her calf taken away? Did she just get off a long trailer ride? I don't think sale barns treat them with a gentle hand.

No hot shots. No calf and not sure on the trailer ride. And I agree that a lot of times they aren't treated with the kindest hand. I didn't stay to see my steers sell. They were gentle and kind and never caused me any trouble and didn't want to see them on their final venture. I know they needed to go but hated to see it.

Folks around stock yards pay attention when someone yells "Mad BULL!" but they climb the nearest fence when someone yells "Mad COW!"

Last year a lady was killed by a loose cow in the Redding Auction Yard's parking lot...cow got loose and whacked her hard. I think she hit her head on the cement when she got run down.

And this....
A WOMAN from Warrington has been killed by a herd of cows in North Yorkshire.
The woman, who has not been identified and is understood to be a vet, had been walking in the Yorkshire Dales yesterday lunchtime when she was trampled.
The 49-year-old was walking along the Pennine Way near to Hawes in North Yorkshire, at 12.15 along with her dogs, a white and brown spaniel and a smaller, Collie dog.
Police say the herd of cows became agitated and surrounded her.
Police say she was 5ft 2ins tall.
North Yorkshire Police are now working with the coroner and the Health and Safety Executive to find out what happened.

I have been around cattle all my life. I have never been attacked by a bull (outside of a rodeo arena), but I have been attacked by numerous cows, including once being chased by a cow up a muddy hill while wearing cowboy boots and 5 buckle overboots ( of course unbuckled ) She was a horned Hereford and she never got horn weights. She had a wicked set of hooks and knew how to use them. She was a hay line bully. At he top of the hill was a pipe gate with 2 other cows standing sideways along the gate. Somehow I made it over both the cows and the gate. I believe that I may have actually achieved flight. My boss was standing on the other side of the gate. The look on his face was priceless.....
I also once had a cow climb in the back of a pick-up with me ( I was holding her calf at the time).

I have had a bull come after me but more cows than bulls. Last time it was raining (of course) and she'd had her calf but the silly thing was down in a sink hole. I was trying to push it out and she was trying to come after me with the intent of killing me. I had to leave the calf in there for a little bit till the BF got home and I was trying to tell him what she did and he didn't believe me. He did once we got down there and she came after me again. Guess she didn't like me all that well. Unfortunately the calf didn't make it (raining and about 40 and he was in a clay filled sink hole) and she was shipped. I hate fearing for my life for whatever reason the cow has! LOL!

I'm glad I've never met a cow that mean.
But I have been surrounded by agitated cows... it is not an experience I EVER want to repeat. Happened when I was very young I think probably 10 or so with my little brother who would have been 4 at the time. We were out in the pasture loving on the horses and he got smacked in the head by a thick jawed quarter horse who swung her head back to shake a fly. Went into the house and got him an ice-pack, put it on his head and went to look for the other horse further down the pasture. I check on the ice-pack to see how his head is and I find it's sticky and covered in blood. Me not knowing you don't ever tell a child under 5 that they're bleeding did just that. He's bawling and crying as we walk back to the house, his crying gets the cows stirred up and they run up and partially surround us. Scared the S out of him(and me) enough to make him stop crying long enough for us to get the heck out of there.

The neighbors were loading cows to take to the sale barn. A cow had the old man down grinding him into the ground with her head. The neighbor that was helping and the old mans' son got her off of him. The old man survived with some life long injuries, the neighbor also was injured. They wasted no time getting that cow to the sale barn.
