Cows look mangey??

Our cows look as if they have patches of missing hair. They have been in a small pasture and are fed twice a day oat hay. At first I thought it may be wfrom the weather but here in Calif. its just been rainy. Can anyone give me an idea of what to do for that. Thank you.

Probably lice or mange mites!! Go to your local farm store or feed store and get some IVOMEC POUR ON easy to use and kills internal and external parasites.Ijust wormed cows this weekend and it is quick and easy If you have gentle cows you don't even have to pen them, it pours down the back from shoulders to hips.

It could be from the weather. You mentioned that it has been rainy. Has there been a lot of rain and little sunshine. If so it could be ringworm. My husband said not to worry that once the sun comes out it will clear it up. You can get medicine but it is expensive.

Do cows get winter coats in California? If so maybe they are just shedding it.

I would have to agree with mike ,
It is that time of year , when lice seem to be most evident , especially since it is shedding season as well , and teh cows are doing a bit of rubbing and scratching anyway to get rid of hair. Or, they could be bored , and be rubbing for something to do .. but skin critters would be my most likely suspicion.
I agree , Ivomec ,or its new generation derivitives , I like the cyticeden(I have spelled it wrong I am sure ) it is bright purple and I can tell which cows i have hit , plus you can use it on prego cows ....If you cannot get close enough to run a dose down their topline .. here is a simple trick ... take one of the plastic scoops that come in laundry detergent and duct tape it onto the end of a long pole ..... pour your dose in that and reach out over your beasts and apply ...
Now .. if its ring worm , and your vet can tell you .... dont ignore it , I would have to disagree that the sun will clear it up,if you can actually wash your beasts use a solution of 1:10 clorine bleach every few days till you see evidence of hair growth .. or the vet can give you an antifungal cream ,or check your farm supply store for ringworm shampoos ....wear rubber gloves
Ring worm is highly contagious to other stock as well as people too ..
its a good idea to rinse down bunkers , feed tubs , water tanks with the bleach solution ....

If you use a pour-on they can't get wet (rained on) within a certain amount of time. Read the bottle for the time.

Label says it is NOT afected by rain!I double checked this when I wormed cows this weekend because they were calling for rain in the evening Paula thanks for the laundry scoop tip :worship: I sometimes use a plastic measuring cup but it is bulky. The bad thing about there built in aplicator is that it only goes up to 550 live wt. and it takes a double dose or more for most cows!

Eprinex is the same as regular Ivomec, but it is rain resistant.

I gotta do my cows soon. Waiting for the mud to dry up a bit...HA! I like the cup on a stick idea too. I wonder if I can get them while they have their heads in the bunk feeder. Much easier than running them through the chute.

Ringworm in cattle can be common in the winter. It does clear up by itself when the weather clears up.
