One of the women I work with has a Galvay (spelling?) 2 year heifer that was recently bred to an Angus. She said she'd sell her to me for $400.

I assume you know and trust the seller to check that the cow isn't ill and does not have behavioral problems.

I don't know anything about Gelbvieh, but for that amount of meat production the price is cheap.

This woman is a friend who lost her husband to cancer two years ago. She kept the remants of their herd and this heifer is one of the last...she loves her cows like they were her babies. When I was going to shoot one of my friend's ewes that had OPP (long story short is we took the ewe to see what her lambing problems were; no milk/hard bag was the problem) this lovely woman gave the old ewe a place with her "retired" flock on a hillside pasture. She is just down to pets and wants this heifer to go to a good home. Now for the tenuous part...there may be a better trade for hay in it for her with the local mennonite hay dealer and he buys up cattle. She is going to think it over tonight and possibly go that route. I told her that she needs to do what's best for HER, and no pressure on my part. Buttttttt...have you folks ever seen Galvay cattle? they are so darned PURTY! I don't NEED another cow...but I really really really really really like this one!

I have Gelbvieh cows, used to have a lot but retired now. They are the best in my opinion. Good combination of beef and milk for raising a calf (I never tried milking, but understand they are good milkers). I usually crossbred with angus and got fast growing beefy calves. Gelbvieh can be a bit more highstrung than some breeds but not really to bad. As tink says $400 is a steal. if she has no problems, around here $1000+ would be more realistic price.
And, yes, the golden gelbvies are purty!

Boohoo, she DID the trade with the hay...BUT she is selling her 6-year old mama, bred to an angus, for $800. If she takes payments, I'm going to buy her. I am pretty excited.
