Stumped

Dexter cow 3 calved about a month ago. She ended up getting mastitis...milk culture - few yeast and alpha hemo. strep. I treated here even tho alph is non-pathogentic..3 infusions 12 hours apart, systemic excenel, some dex as she was really knotted up. Never cleared up. took another milk sample and per my brother up north who milks holsteins, gave her polyflex with a little dex as infusions twice a day for 4 days. No change at all. Milk results came back as Group G Strep. He (brother) said go out and do a cmt on her. No coag at all. Milked out about 1/3 c. to see how it ran thru the filter. Went fine, BUT, the filter had these yellow fleshy pieces like boogers? He is stumped. I did have the lab run a mycoplasma on her so hopefully that comes out o.k. cuz that would be some pricey steaks! Any input...He said leave her alone. If these masses stay in her udder thru this laction she will most likely freshen with a lost quarter. Not sure if she is just walling it off or what. Never went off feed, or down at all...no temp. Crazy

I`m affraid I will be of no help, I hate when you get a problem with a cow and you do everything you know how to do and nothing helps. Wishing you the best of luck. > Marc

Is it just 1 teat? Does she make enough from the other 3 to justify keeping her?

If so, I'd just quit milking the bad one. If you use an antibiotic dry cow treatment on it at dry-off, it may be OK for her next lactation. I've seen that happen, although more often than not it will be done for good.

Those "few yeast" could be the problem. Yeast doesn't always grow well in bacterial culture media. It could be there still and not showing up. Antibiotics are worthless against yeast.
