Well just got back from out there - no other new one's yet.
Went back out to weigh, tattoo, gender check and tag them.

Sire of both calves is: Yon Legend W452 (AAA 16507856)

The one who's mom I don't know the tag number of yet is now
has a Blue tag marked 101 tattoo is Y01 gender bull weight 72.8

Calf of cow Bar T Blackbird 408 - AAA 14917675
has a Blue tag marked 102 tattoo is Y02 gender bull weight 71.6

I had to carry 101 about 1/4 of a mile to my shed to do all of that.

I defiantly need a better way of weighing them - me holding the calf went over the weight the digital scale could measure so I had to put a mineral feeder on the scale then get the calf into the feeder and still long enough for the weight to register - talk about a pain.

Nice looking cows and calves!

Yup, birthweights are a pain to get, even though they are important. We have tried the "hold the calf and step on the scale" method also. Hubby can't do it, we don't have enough scale. My back tells me about it for days when I do it. Also tried the weight tape from Nasco that goes around the hoof. Not real happy with either method, so for next year I am gonna invest $20 in a game scale from Sportsman's Guide and rig up a calf sling with a couple of old cinches. In my mind's eye, two cinches go under the calf's belly, one in front and one behind the navel, with the rings from the cinches in the hook on the bottom of the game scale. Then a rope tied to the top of the scale, thrown over a rafter or the hay spike and hoist it til the calf is just off the ground.

mo_cows - yup - was thinking about this last night and a game scale also came to my mind. I like the idea of a rope over the rafters and the sling but I'm not getting a picture in my mind of the cinches - not sure what a cinch is at this point.

I think I have pulley I'll sink a hook into the rafter and put the pulley on the hook - make lifting the little critter easier.

Thanks for the suggested idea!

I feel for you mary - my pasture this time last year was in the beginning stages of being turned to dirt and was dirt by the 2nd week of September.

We have been fortunate this year with what seems like almost weekly rainfall. But it's spotty and people 20 miles from here are looking starting to feed hay - fortunately the hay is affordable when compared to the prices you folks in Texas and Oklahoma are looking at.

I suspect he is talking about the cinches that have a ring on each end that attach to the saddle and go under a horses' belly to hold the saddle on.

Well was out moving the cows today had to separate them to keep the two cows that are due "any day" from getting into the large wooded area.

So one has what I think is afterbirth hanging out so I spend an hour and a half looking for the calf I think the mama stashed in the large wooded area that borders the pasture she was in.

I finally gave up and was taking care of some other things when I notice the cow as hooves sticking out of her backside. I go to the truck and text my family that I'll be a while I'm going to watch a calf being born. By the time I get back to where the mama cow is she's laying down on her side with the calf 3/4 of the way out. Mind you it took me less than 5 minutes to walk to the truck, text, and walk back to her.

So I snapped a couple of pictures with my phone when my daughter texts back and says to video it. By the time I got the phone to video mode I hear a sploosh and the calf is out.

I think I may have recorded mama getting up but I for sure got her licking the calf for the first time.

Took the calf 22 minutes from drop to standing and about another 10 before he was trying to nurse (was more like licking the teet trying to figure it out).

I'll go harass the calf tomorrow morning getting the weight, tagging and tattooing it.

Pics...

Calf born yesterday weighted 100 pounds and is a bull - that's 5 bulls and 2 heifers - rather lopsided!
