OH NO! Cow With Mastitis

I have a just fresh (6) days dexter cow (2nd calving) who has mastitis in her left rear quarter. She got it from a cracked teat (ant bites) and green saw dust she was layin in Anyways, CMT's her bloody milk and it was pos. I figure I should get a clean sample to freeze for milk test, but should I go ahead and treat her. Did not take a temp. It has a lot of swelling in that quarter and the cmt gelled up right away.

Yes, treat her right away! The bloody mastitis is NASTY ...

Hoping for a good outcome for your girl!

CMT tests are not real accurate with fresh cows.
Since she has a hot quarter, I would treat it with Today (or whatever OTC they have in your area) and send a clean sample in ASAP.

Milk that quarter out completely each time. Dont be afraid to do some good thorough massage on the area when you put the infusion in.
You want the tube of stuff to go into an empty bag.

Dont wait to find out what strain of bacteria you are dealing with.
Every day she harbors it, she is damaging the area and scar tissue builds up in there.

Best of luck!

Yes, treat, don't wait. BUT, get the sample before you treat her. The antibiotic in the treatment will affect the culture you send in and you might not get a true reading.

Take a sample before you treat.
