Problem with Calves
Our neighbors called us. They have 2 little bull calves they got from a friend. THey are around 6 weeks old and still getting milk with some milk replacer. One is doing great. The other one started scouring and it hunched up a little like it might have been in pain. There were spasms or what looked like them in its stomach area. He only drank half of his bottle. They gave it some LA200, Vit B and something for scours. Since then he is finishing his entire bottle and having some scours, but not as bad. Today he started bulging in the rear end area (see pictures below) and is all hunched up again. Any clues? They have called a vet but are waiting on a response.

It sure looks like a perineal hernia to me. <off to the Merck, BRB>

This is what I found there.
http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/in...ineal%2chernia
From the book:
Rectal prolapse is common in young animals in association with severe diarrhea and tenesmus. Causal factors include severe enteritis, endoparasitism, disorders of the rectum (eg, foreign bodies, lacerations, diverticula, or sacculation), neoplasia of the rectum or distal colon, urolithiasis, urethral obstruction, cystitis, dystocia, colitis, and prostatic disease. Perineal hernia, or other interruption of normal innervation of the external anal sphincter, may also produce prolapse.
I would probably get the vet out, myself.
Good luck to your neighbors.

This is not a rectal prolapse. In a rectal prolapse the internal intestine actually comes out the anus. I'm wondering if the calf has recently been surgically castrated, it looks like an infection to me.

No, it is not a prolapse. It is a hernia caused by scouring. Often to be followed by a prolapse.
It is often a genetic thing too, having the weak booty.

Have they felt the area? I'm curious if it is hard or soft. If it is some kind of hernia they should be able to press on the area and it will go back inside (of course it will come out again when they release it).

If it were mine, I'd have a vet out...looks like some sort of abscess or possibly an infected bite?

Did it start out that big or did it slowly progress? That poor fella, makes me hurt thinking about it. Let us know what the vet says as I am really curious to see what can be done for it.

Yes. The vet came out and said it was just a lump like when you get water on the knee. He lanced it and clear liquid came out. They had to rinse it and keep it clean until it healed. The calf is doing great.

He said it could have been caused by a hard bump against something.
