How many calves per year...

Can a dairy cow raise per year? I know a lot of people will use jerseys or holsteins as nurse cows and raise calves on them and I just didn't know the best process for that?? Have an orphan and have been looking for a nurse cow but know she would most likely give way too much for just one calf and so didn't know exactly how best to approach that.

A friend of mine had a brown swiss nurse cow and one year he said she raised 9 calves but i think 6 or 7 was the norm

I've heard of people raising pasture veal (about 250 lbs) and raising 12 calves. As I remember they would start with 4, then 3, then 3 again, then 2.
