funny way to start out your day...
This morning I thought how odd my life was on my little farm, my morning conversation with my three month old Jersey bottle heifer calf..
bad cow, you are not supposed to be in the feed room, hey, don't chew on that, out you go, no no no, leave that feed can alone, hey, don't kick at the dog, leave the rat cages alone, you are going to let that one out, you have two whole acres to play on, why are you in here bugging me?!!! stop licking my leg, don't eat that, get that out of your mouth, don't bug the chicken she is laying, why did you just pee in here?!!!

Farmergirl, I'm afraid your not the only one with that problem. I'm the the talker from hell and have long-running conversations with cows, calves, a duck, a goose, three dogs, a couple of elderly pigs and the wild Pukeoes that come in for a feed of maize twice a day. We live in a valley and one neighbour told another that my dogs have a pedigree as long as his arm and little of it was repeatable
But these "conversations" pay off eventually - not only can you vent at animals who couldn't give a brass razoo, much of what you say is repetitive and eventually fits it with what your doing. i.e. when I turn the radio off in the cow shed I always say, "that's it, lets go". The cows have tuned into that and as soon as the radio goes off they start moving up to race and the dogs get in behind. The Pukeoes work out that there is no more food forthcoming and stalk off to the river.
Keep at it, it's fun and can make life easier and more pleasant for both you and your stock.
Cheers,
Ronnie

True that. I talk to my animals so that they know the sound of my voice and know to come (or head for the barn) when I call to them.

farmgirl,
I have 41 head of black Angus cattle. Although they have acres and acres of pasture available to them, I also feed them some cattle feed every morning so I can look them over, spray them with fly spray when necessary, and trap them for treatment (vaccinations, etc.) when needed. I start out each morning by yelling, "C'mon girls, let's eat!" The ones that aren't already in the barnyard waiting for me, come running.

I do the same thing with our critters. My Jersey cow, Matilda, is by far the best listener, though!

Animals are the best company I can think of. When I was milking in a stanchion barn and raising replacements I would be behind on one side , touch their hip and say excuse me to get them to move so I could scrape under them . Once they were grown all I had to do was say "excuse me" and they would take a step sideways . It was said I had very polite cows!

farmgirl, I sing loud outside too, the animals just look at me and listen. They all know words and names so well, ours are spoiled too. My favorite song to sing to them is Santa Clause is coming to town. He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake. I'm sure people down in the valley can hear me and must think I'm a loony bird for sure. But I don't care. It makes you feel good to be happy.
I talk and chatter to them all the time. I call the wild birds and bunnies to come get their bread, and if I forget, the birds will come to the door, the Cardinals and Blue jays. They know where I am at all times. I am never alone.
Yesterday all day was, Now Bubba (the mini stud), none of us here like you standing by the fence and screaming all day for Daisy (old Saddle mare). I know she's in heat, but for heaven's sake Bubba, you come up to her knees, and she is just too old for you. Now turn around and go on back to your own girls out in the field and watch over them like you're supposed to. We are tired of you ruining the peace and quiet now.
You ever walk outside and yell, You all just be good today OK! I'm going to work in the garden now, and I mean it!

also kind of funny, I have an eight year old pet steer named Norman who I bottled raised, and when he was out in the pasture and I had those temporary step in plastic posts holding the hot wire, he would scratch his head and pull them up, much to my annoyance.
Now I live it a very high end neighborhood surrounded by folks with too much class to complain but surely sorry they did not change the zoning laws before I moved in, so our set up is quite unusual. seven garages, 6000 square feet with a spiral staircase to the left of us, lovely pool and mansion with I kid you not, an ELEVATOR and a private movie screening room to the right of us, and there we are, plunked in the middle with goats and chicken and honey bees, and cows
My husband was out with a friend of his from work, washing one of his cars, when I noticed from the deck Norman was at it again, I rushed outside and yelled for him to stop, "bad cow, you are a very bad cow, stop that". My husbands friend, who is a one star general in the army, stopped hosing the car and started laughing, telling my husband "now that is not something you hear everyday!"
