the story about bulls got me thinking.....

Norman has been a steer for well over five years, and seems quite docile, but I know how a Jersey can be, has anyone ever had a steer act badly and have a "bull behavior relapse" when a cow came into heat? I just got this baby jersey heifer, and Norman has lived his entire life with no cow in sight, no females at all, even the horses are boys..just female goats...need I be concerned? he got rambuncious when he got out but I have never seen him aggressive since he was castrated even when being bullied by the horses..thoughts?

I probably know the answer but why keep a steer for 5 years?

Norman

He is actually almost seven, and because he is a big pet I am very attached too and I am just a hobby farmer really. But that is a very good question... plus my husband got him for me for an anniversary...and I am sentimental to a fault.

I've had two "evil" steers - one turned, just like a bull, at only 8 months old. He was a Jersey, so he was fairly small and I only got one huge bruise. He went to the freezer that week.
The other was a Milking Shorthorn, two years old. One day he slipped in the mud and when he got to his feet, started snorting, pawing, and charging. Fortunately there was a chicken tractor in the middle of the field, and my dad and the (1500 #) steer circled back and forth for 15 minutes until the steer got bored and walked away.
The other two steers we've had were super sweet, but knew to keep their distance.
You never know!

steer

Norman is almost eight, and about as placid as you can get, but then again he has never been around a cow in heat...so hard to believe, I can hollar to him from the porch and he chugs up to the fence to get petted, pushes the horses out of the way for a brushing when he sees me standing at the fence with the curry comb. He walks up and watches me if he sees me working in the garden...the pony and mini kick the snot out of him at feeding time and he just closes his eyes and gently shoves them away. But I guess you never know, the time he got out recently he slammed a tree with his head over and over, and good size tree and I thought it was going down...and he is easily 1500 pounds....I hope he behaves...
