Bovine Herpies

Has anyone dealt with this condition????

A friend just called me she has found a 4 year old, freshened in March, she is registered, VERY friendly milking about 5 gallons/day, $600 obo................. But she has Bovine Herpies??? Are they a deal breaker???

I googled it and they seem to be easy to deal with?

A farm I tested had this problem with some of its cows. The lesions can wreck a teat, although some cows do heal up.

I always cleaned my meters extra-carefully after testing that herd!

I think I would probably pass on that cow. Even if she's OK now, she could develop lesions later that could affect your ability to milk her.

Is this the same viral family as cow pox?

I can honestly say that I wouldn't pay that price for her. Maybe if she were so inexpensive it was worth any risk, but not that much. Half that? yes, I'd get her. If I were concerned about the disease then I would have some tough hamburger.

The cow is worth more at the butcher than what they want, I say go for it. > Marc
