Today is due day

My little Jersey Juicy Lucy is due to calve today with her first calf. She was bred by my Dexter bull. So far my $300 bull has given me 4 heifer calves and 1 bull. 2 of the heifers are Jersey crosses and the other 2 heifers and bull calf were to Angus cows.

I am very excited to see how this cow milks out! She has developed a beautiful udder! Check out a picture of her udder on my blog, I will post pictures of the new calf as soon as "she" arrives. lol

Wow! What a beautiful Jersey. I'm so glad you posted pics of her before she has her calf. I keep looking at my Jersey and thinking, is she? is she not? Sometimes I think she looks huge, and the next day she doesn't. We're planning on a late May/early June calf...can't wait to see pics of yours.

Yes, I got a HUGE bull calf this morning, just after 7:30 am, I went to go and check on her at 3:30, she was contracting. So I made a pot of tea, and headed back to the barn. Got my lawn chair all set up, curled up in a blanket, cat curled up on my lap.............. the next thing I knew my husband was waking me up at 6am. He scared the bejesus out of me!!! lol I guess the lawn chair was to comfortable. We milked the other 2 girls, fed everyone else, and hubby went off to work. I was trying to get the kids ready for school and went to peek at her....... there was feet!
I called my girl friend, who is a city girl and just wanted to be there to see a baby born. She made it is time. She contracting good and hard. But was having a hard time with the shoulders. I waited for a contraction and gave her a little help with a gentle pull as she pushed.... and out he popped! She did not lay down. I have never had a cow calf standing up? The big bull calf, as I have named "Brisket" was up in no time, had a good nurse and then curled up and fell asleep. Juicy is resting now. She was a SUPERSTAR for her first time with the milking machine! She does not however like the head locks..... so I just tied her to a post. She did not kick at me once. Yay for happy friendly heifers.

I am just going to update my blog and add some pictures.
