The Old Lady (pics)
Here are some more pics of my old lady, 14 years old this spring. She's 3/4 Angus and 1/4 Hereford. She's a wise, gentle old girl. I love old cows like this, nothing really surprises her, she knows to come when I call her, she follows me when it's time to change pastures, comes up to the corral for a bite of grain, open the trailer door and she climbs right in. She teaches the younger cattle these things because they all follow and do what she does. She knows how to get a newborn calf up quickly and nursing, she's a good protective mamma, but lets me handle her calves. She's got arthritis in her hips and hobbles around and needs better feed in the winter because there's not much left of her teeth. But, she's still in good overall condition so maybe we'll try for one more calf.
This is her with her heifer from last year.
Her bull calf this year. He was born April 4.

She looks like a much younger cow. If I didn't know, I'd say she was 8-10.

She would thank you for the nice comment with a slurpy lick. She washed my camera for me this morning.

Nice photos and a very nice tribute to a good cow. The older ones are worth their weight in gold, aren't they? They become very good friends to us. What a nice post!

She's a beauty. I love the facial markings she throws.

Looking sound all around!
With your attention to her condition, she should be able to bring even more calves. Just like with people maybe? Forty is the new thirty...

I would be happy to take her heifer off your hands She is a beautiful cow, and I agree that she throws some pretty calfs too.

I believe that when they have given you 14 good years, that they deserve a bit of extra feed in the winter and a bit of extra pampering.

I agree, she's definitely pampered. She has more than earned it.

That is one stocky little bull, too! Looking at her udder, it's easy to see why.
Just curious; how many daughters has she put in the herd?
My boss on the dairy where I work had a Holstein who went 11 lactations. I pestered him to flush her before it was too late; those genetics are too good to let go! I've gone back through the herd book from time to time, and have not stumbled across records of a SINGLE daughter! I can't believe she threw only bull calves, but hey anything's possible.

Her record is 7 heifers and 5 bulls. I've got an old book about dairy cattle and it has a photo of a Jersey cow lined up with 8 of her daughters. They are all gorgeous and it's a real neat, old, black and white photo. I have a Dexter bull for a couple of years and he sired 13 calves for me, 11 were heifers. He was a good bull.
