Coughing Jerseys

Howdy folks--Just hoping for some thoughts on our coughing Jerseys.

4 year olds, one is due to freshen June 1st and the other in mid-July.

Haven't taken temperature. Hydration is good. We have been feeding them 1st crop hay from last year (overripe) and are in the process of transitioning them to pasture. 2 hours yesterday, 4 today after they eat hay this morning.

It has been a very cool spring here in WI, but as usual it went from cool to hot and humid the past few days.

We brought these two home last Thursday. Both of them seem to have a bit of a cough--usually just one little burst of back hunching "hoof" It is not a consistent cough, just a once and a while thing.

What would be my laundry list of considerations for a coughing cow? What are some ailments that could be the problem? Or is it not a problem, and I am the worrying parent?

Thanks in advance. I am really enjoying all of the wisdom on this forum!!

I would have the vet look at them. Did they come through a sale barn or from a trader? Cows from either source can be exposed to a variety of illnesses. There are a lot of things that could cause coughing, you can google "cattle and coughing" and come up with some info., but in my opinion the vet would know what was causing it. Otherwise I would just be guessing and so would you even if you read info. from the Internet.

Sounds like they are just coughing up their cud to chew. It's one big violent cough and then you will see them chewing, right?
