My cows are FINALLY home!

I don't know if you all remember, but back in around the middle of January I was supposed to be getting two dexter jersey cross cows and a heifer calf. Well it was a HUGE episode and it seemed like the world was working against me getting them. About a week ago they got away and busted up the neighbors yard and the heifer calf got in with all his heifers and he claims that there was no heifer calf. Said he never saw her and all the ones in the pen are his. I have no idea what the people selling her to me are going to do, but I am not paying for her until they get her back. So anyway, they caught the cows and didn't want to risk them getting away again so they kept them in a stock trailer for a week until they could get them to me. It was such a gong show but the cows DID come home and I only paid $100 for shipping.

So anyway here they are. I think they look a touch rough just because they were kept in a trailer for a week (fed and watered, but still....). Now they are loose on 160 acres. They are both incredibly tame. I bet I could almost ride them! lol! jk! They love being scratched and petted.

They are supposed to be 3 and 4 and each have had a calf before.

I think they look pretty darn good, they are in great shape. Did they ever get the heifer back? > Marc

So far not. She got in with 50 young black heifers and the guy is saying there was no heifer as far as he knows. He said they have to wait till fall and they can have the one that doesn't get to full size. DOH! Thats as far as I know so far. Apparently he also kept a bull calf that got in there last fall as well. They are working on getting him back. I promised to buy them both if they can get them. Hopefully that keeps them motivated enough to keep working on the neighbor.

I'd suggest to your sellers to start marking their cows. Your cows look nice. Are you milking or raising beef?

I raise a calf or 2 a year, for the freezer. My nieghbor raises a pasture full. One day we got home and the neighbor had cattle out, on the road, all over the place. So we helped him get them in. All but one really stubborn one. He kept after it on the 4 wheeler, driving it back, it'd bolt and come back this way. DH looked in Our pasture, and said Wait, That one is Cheri's!
HAHAHAHA they all look alike.
This year I have a belted Buelingo heifer. No question which one is mine, now! I plan to keep her and maybe raise calves. I can use a friend's bull, and he doesn't have any belted ones, either!

Raising beef. I am hoping to get enough milk from them that they can raise their own calf and I could steal some to raise a bottle calf or two. Maybe lock them in a head gate and let the other calf suck. I have had a number of friends that have done just that. Someday it might be fun to have a milk cow, but I know I can't fit that into my lifestyle at the moment.

Oh and the people that sold them to me ONLY had these cows. They got them from a friend of an aunt or something that raised them in their basement. Something to do with them needing to be rescued or something. I dont know. Then they got a bull, bred the cows and he kept getting away so they ate him JUST before the next breeding season! I don't get it.

It happens in the far north lol! Someone I know took one in their basement and it got too big to get up the stairs. I forget how they finally got it out, but it was a bit crazy.

This situation is why people brand cattle.
