Cool White Face / Charla Cross

Does anyone have an opinion or experiance crossing a Herford/Angus Bull with a Charla Hefer. Concerned with the Quality/Marbling potenial of the calf to be.

thanks

Should make pretty good beef. Not an uncommon cross to bred Angus/Hereford cows to Char bulls is a pretty good cross. Should work the other way around too.

That's the calf de jour around here

Some of the best ranchers around here are using Char cows with an angus bull. The calves tend to be larger than with a Hereford and black still gets a better price at market. Heifers are kept for stock too. I think Hereford are better range grazers, angus are like lazy dogs that idle about in the shade so if they're fed they'll have more marble.

Since Angus and Hereford have fairly small calves, using a Angus/Herford bull on a Charl. would result in a nice calf and easy births. When you turn it around and use a Charl bull on Angus or Herefords, you increase your calving problems. About 20 years ago, I had a neighbor try this. Almost everyone had to be delivered by C-Section. I don't know if they saved the calves or not. Lots of cows in the pasture with a huge scar up their sides.

My experience with Angus is they are wild fence jumping kangaroos, much prefer the calmer Herefords, but the money is on black, right now.

Char has improved their calving ease over the last 20 years. You can find easy calving ones and you can find hard calving ones. Same for Angus and Hereford. There is good and bad in every breed, you just have to pay attention to what you're using and you can find what you want easily enough!
