Dexter milk cow

Mornin' all.

Saturday I am going to look at purchasing my first milk cow. I've never owned one before, and given my location small framed milk cows are in short supply. The cow I am looking at is a 2 year old Dexter who is due to calve next month. She has never been milked before, and this is her first calf.

Now on to the question. I know I can handle halter/lead line training her. Is it possible for a rookie to training a cow to milk? How much time should I expect to training this heifer? The asking price is $700, which to me isn't bad, but what do you think?

It's a good price. Dexters are known to be a gentle breed and you should be able to manage quite well with her. They are individuals, though. If I were you I'd go visit her first to see how approachable she is and how comfortable you'll feel being really close to her.

You'll be spending a lot of time with your face pressed into her flank. Make sure y'all get along together.

If this is a gentle heifer, it is a good price. If she is used to being handled then half the job is done. Try this link for a discussion on milking a new cow.
