Question? Have you or anyone you know cross bred the highland to a standard beef breed? If so, what was the outcome for potential beef? I've heard they are best finished on grass.

Sorry, I have not. Hopefully, someone else will come on here and help you.

We have crossed a number of Highlands to our short leg Dexter bull. Our experience is that they mature a lot more quickly than the purebred Highlands, and retain much of the Highland appearance. This guy was about 7 months old when the photo was taken.http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Jdt6XRXzVX...0/P1010100.JPG

And here's a little girl born last year out of the same bull but a different cow. Probably the most beautiful little calf we've ever had...http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Jdt6XRXzVX...0/P1010002.JPG

We have had and made a nuber of crosses , angus was ok, simmie was ok , but the best cross we have made was a highland x saler , I have the resulting cow and she throws aome very dandy 3/4 highland calves that we have used or sold for 4H over the years.

And thats a dandy little bull calf .. congrats !

lakeport, we have a highland cross calf born around Christmas that looks exactly like your grey one. Except his mom is blond. We do highland crossing regularly.
We cross to black baldy, pinzgauer, longhorn and mixed breed. The babies grow bigger, faster, and retain the hardiness of the highland.

As much as I love the Highland crosses and think they make exceptional stock, nothing beats a purebred Highland calf for stopping cars on the road to get out and look at them...

+1

Cute pics all around! We only have the one little one for the moment, a white bull calf. He looks like he will be a sweetie, will need to see if can get a decent pic of him.
