It's a Heifer

Ta Da.. My new jersey, Cookie, calved today - her due date. A nice little heifer.

If I can get a good picture, I will post it tonight. The stall has wood walls (brown) the straw is brown, the cow is brown, the calf is brown.....

Now for the next stress point - MILKING!!! Going out to hang a head gate now. Hope I can get it up and it doesn't fall down on both of us in the morning. This is will be so exciting when we get past all the mooooooing.

how adorable! I can imagine you're excited! Is the calf a keeper?

We have our replacement heifer already, and if our cow gives us another heifer this year (6 out 6 of her last calves were heifers!) we'll just raise it for a few months and sell it. Now watch this be her first bull calf!

I named her Daisy. I have always wanted a cow named Daisy. I do not know what I am going to do with her. I do not want 2 cows to milk so we will just see how it all pans out. There's really no reason to sell her until she's bred unless there's a really poor hay crop this year or something. I never saw Daisy nurse yesterday so I milked some colostrum out into a bottle just in case we needed it. Cookie let me milk her right in the stall. I was pleased about that.

I put up a headgate for Cookie yesterday. I was really glad I had it this morning. It took some convincing to get her to put her head in it.....then the claw's gasket wasn't sealing and it was a mini-disaster. DH went out with me an hour later and we got things working just fine. Whew! Now the next sad step- taking the baby away. After that - hopefully, it will all be down hill for a while. I could use a bit of that.
