Anybody looking for a family cow? PA/WV/OH area
The farmer I work for was talking about culling a heifer due to low production. The thing is, she's a tiny, tiny cow! I don't think I've ever seen a smaller first-calf heifer. She wasn't bred early or anything weird, she's just SMALL!
I would have to go back and look at the records, but I think she was making about 50 lbs. a day at the peak of her lactation. She's about 250 days in milk now (again I would have to check), has been bred back but not confirmed pregnant. (He usually doesn't preg check, just dries 'em off and if they come up open, they go on the truck.)
She got hurt about halfway through her lactation. We had a huge cow who was cystic and mounting everything in sight; I think this big cow jumped her and rode her into the ground. She did the splits and couldn't get up on her own at first. She's been in a box stall since (brought in to milk twice a day, of course) and has been doing fine, can't tell there was anything wrong with her now.
She's a cute little cow, not overly friendly but not nervous either. Nice high udder, short teats, but they're "soft" so you won't have a hard time getting milk out of her. I don't recall her ever having mastitis or any other health issues. I call her "Petunia" but obviously you could change her name.
If anyone is interested, I will talk to him about $$$ but you could probably get her for cull price. (Which is high right now, but she's real small, probably less than 800 lbs.) I think she would make a nice family cow!
