Well crud (or cud)

Ok - ran into an "old time" farmer down the street who we like a lot - don't always 100% trust his opinion on the newer stuff - but cows I do.

He said get a standard jersey not a dexter. Said a bunch of other stuff at me - but that was the punch line

I think I can talk him into "sharing the loot" from the local brewery as well.

He pretty much told me to get my head on straight and stop thinking cute - LOL. Since I told him the same type of story about meat goats I listened.

now back to searching.....

Good thing I didn't sell my milking machine last year

If you want a dexter, get a dexter. If you want a jersey, get a jersey. You need to be happy with the cow you buy no matter what breed. I try to hold back on having to have a certain breed of cow and instead look for a good cow within certain criteria. I might find a really good Dexter that would work better for me than a jersey would - or I might find a really good jersey for a great price. I might find a Dexter that eats more than a jersey and vice versa. There is enough variance within breeds that I can't make a choice on just the breed name. But that's just me.

I think he was talking (as usual) price/availability. I see the ones listed on my other post (Questions about Dexter) and honestly with 5 kids and working here I can't drive 4-5 hours 1 way to pick up a reasonably priced cow.

The way the conversation started was "Do you know anyone who has Dexters?" and his reply "No, but I can find you a good jersey a lot easier and probably cheaper".....

didn't mean to submit (4 year old had been screaming for the last 20 minutes)....

Anyway, he was talking about knowing someone who has jerseys at a really good price (at least he thinks he could get them at a good price since everyone seems to give him great deals).

So we go from here figuring it out We mainly want milk - meat is secondary as we just run Angus for that every year....

No, I agree - it's easier to get what's closest. That's part of the search. You might find a great price 4 hours away, but it isn't always a great price in the end. I sold a jerseyxholstein heifer this summer to someone about 4 hours away. I never did see how they figured that was a good deal.

I understand there can be good prices if you go to the large dairies and buy a less-er producing cow from them. Good friend got her cow that way and she's been a gem.
