Today's Chores
Today, we had to start feeding the cows. The snow just got too hard for them to dig through, especially with so many 2 and 3 year olds, and the fact that they are due to start calving around 2 months from now. It is hard to tell if there is much left out there for them or not. Whatever is left, will be there for them in the spring once the snow melts anyways.
For the person wondering about winter hardy beef cows, these girls are a mix of Hereford, Shorthorn, Angus and Red Angus. There are purebreds and mixes of all those breeds here. Today's high temp was -10 C, and it isn't unusual to have a week or 2 of -30 to -40 weather. They all handle the weather well enough. All they have for shelter is the bit of windbreak you see in the background of a couple of the photos.
