How to feed calf?

I have a 3 mo steered Jersey calf ready to wean, but giving that it is winter, I'm wondering if I need to feed him grain. He's eating hay pretty well, right now he's being fed a 2nd cutting grass/legume mix, more of a maintenance feed for my ewes, which share the same paddock with him. I also have an April born steer calf that was weaned onto grass. I suppose I could keep the young calf on milk, but my Jersey doesn't put out much milk, ~2 gallons a day, and I was hoping to make cheese. This is my first year with cattle, so I don't know how to manage the winter with them.

Tia for your input.

If you are feeding this guy close to the barn, I would give him some grain, especially during winter. He will be stressed from the weaning. This will give him more energy and help him keep condition during the nasty, cold weather.

Mine gets 2 qts. 2 x a day of sweet feed and barley, then all the hay that he wants. He is keeping pretty good condition.

Oats is a good way to start a calf on grain. They don't gum up the works. Introduce corn slowly, especially if it is ground corn.
