New Jersey in the family

Some of you might remember Yo, the Jersey we got in August who was emaciated. And Charlie the calf that came with her. Both are doing really well

I saw another ad in Craigslist for another Jersey cow (not same person), who just calved last month.

We went to see her yesterday and her name is Maggie. No horns this time. She is a little shy of strangers, but he did get her to come into the milking area with us there and put her in the stall and she stayed calm for quite a while while we were talking and petting her.

She looks good. He said he got her in May and she was emaciated as well. They were told she was to calf in August so let her dry up early, but she didn't calf until October. A really sweet heifer calf.

he is just a homesteader like us, but probably more into that us, we are just starting. He is keeping the calf, and will have Maggie two more weeks to wean the calf.

He also has another Jersey which he says is a real easy milker, just shoots out and has Nubian goats, so doesn't need all this milk. (even-though has 6 kids still living at home)

He said Maggie isn't an easy milker, as in doesn't come out as easy as his other one. Her bag is way bigger than Yo's but then Yo was pretty dry when we got her.

I will probably be in a panic for the next few months till I settle into a routine--I am probably worse about that than the cow.

The guy we are getting her from was very nice and offered to be there for support. He said they learned a lot the hard way and they didn't have support.

So this time, we feel comfortable with Maggie and with her current owner (not ours till she is living here).

I will post pictures when she moves in.

She has a much darker face than Yo, and is about the same age 7, 8 years old.

Are you hand milking? Hard to milk cows test your endurance.. and also the cows. Will she stand still long enough for you to finish? Other than that...congrats! I am going to look at another Jersey tomorrow....

Hi Karen,

Congrats on your soon-to-be new cow.
You are going to become an actual dairyfarmer if you aren't careful.

I would love to see new pics of Yo, also.
I bet she has come a long ways in the last months.

Yes, plan to hand milk. I guess we will see how long she stands there, she seems pretty docile.

As for becoming an actual dairy farmer, I scare myself. I didn't know I had an addictive personality, but I guess I do. I am addicted to chickens and now cows. Luckly, I can't afford to buy too many cows, and I don't have the land for too many. So I guess I should count my blessings.

I suspect my addiction might be short lived, when reality sets in.

I will post some pictures soon.
