Calf Breed, Opinions

Every year our great neighbor gives us free (I groom his dog a couple of times a year), an outstanding Jersey calf to raise for beef. The meat has been terrific. He called last night and said he has twin Jersey/Brown Swiss calves just born,a bull and heifer, would I want one or both in about 2 weeks (he keeps them that long for me to give them a great start). I realize the heifer is a freemartin but my questions are: Would they grow out well being twins ( we feed well)? Should I stick with pure Jersey meat or would this be great also?. Thank you in advance...............Joan

Id snatch them both up. Being 1/2 brown swiss they are already probably bigger then some pure jersey calves.

You bet! grab them up. They will give you a lot more beef than a pure Jersey.

Not asolutely certain the heifer will be a freemartin, probably is but a small % of heifers born a twin to a bull aren't. Grab both of them, have her checked if she isn't its a bonus.

My Jersey cow is expecting a Brown Swiss calf. If I get a bull calf, I'll grow him as a steer for the freezer. If I get a heifer, I'll raise her to be a family milk cow. It was an accidental breeding, but I'm kind of excited to see what I get.

I'd check the heifer for sure later on, but take them both regardless!
