the next step...

Since the holstien heifers we went to look at turned out to be all freemartins, we've located a cow/calf pair we're going to look at tonight. We know the dairy this 5 year old Jersey cow came from (our neighbor). She has one bad quarter, and she was sold to this gentleman who has hand milked her for about 3 years. She comes with a heifer calf at her side. He wants $1000.00 for her and her calf together, or $700 for just the cow, $350 for just the calf. We're going to look at the pair and see he'll come down a bit if we do take them both. It seems a bit high compared to others we've looked at, however, she has been regularly hand milked, so that's a plus. We'll see....

That may just be his asking price. I would offer him less. A cow with three quarters, in my opinion, is not worth $700.

We bought a 4.5 year old, registered Jersey, with papers, ready to calve to sexed semen, healthy and being culled from an organic dairy for production for $800, last May. I'm with Linn, maybe it's his asking price, are they papered?? I'd offer $800 for the pair and go from there.

Queensblessing,

In your earlier post about detecting that the calves you were looking at were freemartins, you mentioned that you confirmed that by examining the calves. Did you use one of the tools that measures the depth of the vagina, or was there some other way that you detected that?

Thanks for any advice that I can use in the future.

Yes, we purchased a vaginal probe made for that purpose a year or so ago. It has been worth it's price! They only cost 20 dollars or so, and are truly worth it. There were some hints that all wasn't normal though, such as tiny vulva, etc. The probe just sorta verifies it for us.

We went to look at them and we ended up buying them. The cow looks fantastic! She's a bit older than I'd like, but she's in amazing condition; straight back, good feet, good teeth, etc. She does have one bad quarter, but milked easily when we tried her. She stands fine for milking. Her calf is a beauty too and very used to being handled. We told him that due to the age of the cow, we thought $1000.00 was out of the question. He asked what we were willing to pay for them. We said $700 for the pair. He said he couldn't do that, but he would come down to nothing less than $850.00. We agreed on that. Still a little steep I suppose, but both animals look great. The cow was in heat too. The dairy farmer next door, where the cow was born, offered to AI her for us if we bought her. (They told us about her in the first place, that the guy who bought her from them 3 or 4 years ago needed to sell her for financial reasons.)
I'll post some pics of the pair soon.

Wow, 850.00 for the pair is a steal around here! Is it a bull calf or heifer calf?
Here you would probably pay 1000.00 for the cow alone

Congrats! Dairy prices around Oh, WV and Ky are more solid than in many other locations, it seems.

A couple of good looking critters! I think the price you paid is good for my area as well! Congrats.
