Hauling questions

So...now the steer I bought from Ozarkjewels is all growed up and ready to go to freezer camp, I need to figure on how I'm going to get him there. I spoke with someone that the butcher shop gave me a number for...he said he has no real idea of how much to charge for hauling him...that he'd take some ground meat in exchange for services.
Short of being blunt and to the point which I imagine is what I need to be to avoid confusion...how much is a fair price or amount of meat to trade? I'm going to imagine that the full round trip for this hauler is going to be less than 20 miles.

I paid $65.00 to have two steers taken about 20 miles to the butcher. He had to travel 1/2 hr to my place, so he probably traveled 60 miles total before he made it home, so I think he under charged, but he would not take any more. I know that didn't answer your question, but it gives a comparison....

It used to be (4 years ago) a dollar a loaded mile in my neck of the woods (PA). Thats for something that's easy to load and you have easy access.

Not really sure that helps much in my situation...it's less than 8 miles from me to processor...my steer follows me around like a huge puppydog

But I appreciate all input

$1 a mile is the going rate around here. Post on craigslist and see if anyone is hauling to the butcher and wouldn't mind picking up an extra only 8 miles away, toss in $10 $15 bucks and you should be good. Cheaper than renting a trailer.

Not sure why this doesn`t help you much, gives you an idea, that is what they use to charge around here also, but that has been a few years ago. You have to remember, he is doing you a favor, he doesn`t have to do it. It is always better to be grateful than it is to be needing someone else to haul your critter to the locker. I would say 30-40 dollars would be fair, but thats your call, so just figure what your hamburger is worth, and you got the price. >Thanks Marc

My comment about the $1 a loaded mile was because if I'm less than 8 miles from the place it'd hardly be worth a trip for someone. I can imagine that hooking up a trailer that will haul cattle is more fuss than $ 8 would be worth.
This is my 1st time ever raising a beef animal for the freezer...I have done lots of business with the slaughter house before and an happy with the service they provide... just getting the animal there is my issue. I had someone tell me $50 to haul...looking at my location and the distance loaded that just seemed a bit high.

better to overpay him now than to need him to haul something later and find him unavailable. Maybe offer him $40 or 10lbs hamburger his choice~ and if the animal gives him trouble give a bit more than that.

The 1.00 per mile is normal for long hauls, short hauls is like you said "not worth it". Thats why I also said 30-40 dollars seeems fair. I just would ask him again, and say give me an idea what I owe you. Then go from there. >Thanks Marc

I just gave my hauler a cooler full of meat - 2 roasts, 2 sirlion steaks, and 10 packages of hamburger. THey loved it. It was 45 miles. (and the ox tail for their dog.)

Honestly, I'd say what you're asking for would require one of the "minimum" charges that folks hate to charge. Whether it takes 5 minutes or it's 5 miles, the fellow is using his time, gas, and energy to do you a favor. He's not going to get rich hauling this critter for you for sure. I'd personally recommend you pay him $40.00 per hour with a one hour minumum and/or pay him out in equivalent amount of meat. (Unless of course you have a skill/trade to barter with like repairs, fence building, etc.)

Just my two cents. I think it's great you know someone that's able to haul it for you and I wish you the best steak eatin'!!

I asked hubby what we paid the last time we had a steer hauled & the processor was close (less than 5 miles). We offered $30 and a case of beer & loaded him for them.

Now all the processors are 20-25 miles away.

I thank you all for input..as i said before this is my 1st time...the person I'm dealing with doesn't make a living form hauling and seemed almost embarrassed to ask for money...
He said he'd take a trade of ground meat and maybe a couple of steaks...
I just need to bite the bullet and find out exactly what he has in mind as a fair trade...
