Inflammation due to Banding?

Inflammation due to Banding? - Cattle

Bull calf was born in early July and banded a week later. This inflammation just showed up this week. How serious and is this a vet call? Had a horse gelded in June, and inflammation here due to gelding was normal and was reduced with exercise per direction from the vet. Of course, the horse had antibiotics. None for the calf, just the banding.

The swelling at the navel? Not due to banding the scrotum, I don't think. I'd suspect an infection of the cord area, yes it can show up this late in the game. I'd have a good feel of it, probably put him on antibiotics if it is warm/swollen.

Looks like an infected navel to me as well. Try some penicillin for it, seem to work pretty good for that.

We had a similar situation arise with one of our Holstein bottle calves this spring. We tried penicillin for 2 weeks then finally took it in to the vet and he said it was a fatty hernia. The remedy was to turn it our to pasture and over time due to exercise it will suck itself back in and sure enough you can hardly notice anything was there.

Thanks for the info!

Called Doc. He said penicillin to start. Does not like to try to address swelling directly at first, can lead to hernia in some cases. After 2 weeks if swelling has not subsided we will do more work. Going to give my first injection on a calf for this issue. Gave shots to a dog before so should do ok. Wish me well. Building a head-gate now.
