Getting a surprise calf tonight - what do I do!?

I have NEVER had cows before.

We do have 6 goats.

A friend is giving us her 1 week old jersey calf because she is moving. She called last night. We're picking him up this afternoon. I've been reading through the threads here but I can't seem to make sense out of any of it!

Is there a cow for dummies post somewhere? I really don't want to be totally and completely clueless.

She said he's healthy with no issues. I trust her. He's also already been castrated (isn't it way too early for that?).

I need a checklist or something, LOL.

Yes, look at the sticky threads at the top of the page and look for one that says, "Sale barn bottle calves". It's got a lot of good information and there are lots of folks here to answer questions. Make sure you read through it well. It might take some time, but there's a wealth of info on bottle calves and preferred methods of care.

If this jersey calf has gotten its colostrum though it will be in much much better shape than the auction calves so don't get freaked out when reading the horrors of sale calves.
