Nope, not a breed but a crossbred, often hereford x angus.

Any you lose the hybrid vigor by breeding baldie to baldie.

No, they don't breed true. If you have 'true' black baldies (Heref x angus) you breed together here's what you would get.

As far as color
Ee x Ee
EE 25% homo black
Ee 50% hetero black
ee 25% red

As far as markings
ShS x ShS

ShSh - 25% Hereford markings
Shsh - 50% Bald faced
SS - 25% solid colored

So essentially, 75% of calves will be black, 25% will be red. You will get some Herefords, some Black Herefords, some Red Baldies, some Black Baldies, some solid Red and some Solid black.

Looks like what I remember from my animal genetics of about 40+ years ago.

What about the Black Herefords that are being registered now with the American Black Hereford Association? I haven't looked into them in detail, but I would say they breed as "true" to a black baldie as you can.

The first generation wouldn't breed true, but, with some work and knowledge of genetics, you could get them to breed true, as long as you were breeding for homo Hereford markings. If you are breeding for the actual bald face, you will always run into some Hereford marked and some solid colored cattle.
