Totally stumped!

I went out this morning to check on the calf and mom. I can't find it anywhere. The field is sectioned into paddocks, so not a huge area to search. Very little scrub to hide in. Pretty sure predators are not a big problem out here as my chickens free range and losses are minimal.
Mom is very nonchalant and unconcerned, grazing with her pasture mate. But I can't find the calf anywhere. It's either gone or doing a masterful job of hiding. Is this normal too?
Geez, I'm such a nervous cow-grannie!

LOL! She may be doing a masterful job of hiding it from you.
If I could get paid for every hour I have spent scouring the brush for calves....sigh.
Chances are you nearly tripped over it too.
Keep watching, its out there somewhere.
Perfectly normal and irritating cow behavior.

Man does this sound familiar, I do this about once a year. I to have four pastures, and a neighboring timber. And they are good a hiding their calves, but you sure have to make sure your calf is nursing and moma does know where it is. Calves are real good at hiding, they can lay lower than a snakes belly in a wagon wheel rut. As gone-a-milkin has said, you could have tripped over the calf. I just go out and sound as close to a cow mowwwwwwwwwwing for her calf, and alot of times they will beller back. >Thanks Marc

My dog is not a cattle dog, but she can find a calf a lot better than I can. Sometimes, just bringing her into the pasture will spur mama to go to where she hid the calf while she grazed.

Man........of the God given ability for a mama cow to hide a calf. I had a calf born last month that just showed up one day nursing on his mother. I looked for him religiously for the next week on a 20 acre flat pasture with no success. When she got ready for him to be seen again she brought him to the rest of the cows.

I swear...newborn calves can hide behind a blade of grass.......a blade of grass three inches tall.....Yes, I've spent many an hour looking for new calves.
