After a cow calves

I was wondering how long after a jersey cow has her calf do you have to wait to drink the milk or how long tell the colostrum is all out ?

Here I thought you knew about this

Usually it takes about 24 to 36 hours for the colostrum to revert to "normal milk" as some people call it.

EEEEEWWW I wait at least 3 days before trying the milk . It sometimes takes up to 7 to taste "normal".

I waited 5 days. But I'm new at this..... I would think how quickly it runs though a filter would be a good indication. Or just taste it. some folks drink it for it's health properties - say it will heal illness. So it won't hurt you to drink it with a bit of colostrum in it.

We just go by taste. Colostrum is very good for you, I just don't like the flavour(some people do).

You can always make a custard with the colostrum. DH's grandparents immigrated from Sweden, they called it "pungkakka", I believe. Great for what ails you!

We saved all of our colostrum for the bottle calves we later bought. Kept it frozen until needed. I drank some when I got a sore throat and it seemed to help.

It took us over a week before the milk started tasting like it should. My cow's udder was really swollen with edema for several days after she had her calf. I think that's why it took so long for the milk to taste normal.
