looking for a cattle book

Is there a book of different cattle breeds?
I have seen one for dogs, horses, chickens but never for cattle. My niece loves cattle and I thought it would be a good B-Day present for her.

Our feed store had one - more of a raising cattle manual for beginners, but lots of pages of colored pictures.

Storey's Illustrated Guide to Sheep, Goats, Cattle, and Pigs. That is a neat book.

I bought this book for my grandson at Amazon.com, it is pretty comprehensive, Cattle: A Handbook to the Breeds of the World.

This is one of the best I've come across:

http://www.amazon.com/Field-Guide-Ca.../ref=pd_cp_b_1

The author, Valerie Porter, is well known for her numerous books on livestock breeds, rare breeds in particular. She has also written 2-3 books on small scale cow keeping, house cows in particular. Her writing style is very entertaining and one of the most factual I've come across. I highly recommend this book.

Not sure how old your niece is, but I would second:

A Field Guide to Cows: How to Identify and Appreciate America's 52 Breeds.

It is a fun and approachable book and emphasizes how to identify breeds while "cow watching" instead of being an overly technical field guide with lots of breed and registry history. I have it on my coffee table with the other books and have yet to have a little visitor at the ranch that hasn't picked it up (adults love it too!)

The one mentioned in my post has numerous photos of each breed, all in color. I have all of the books mentioned so far, and I firmly believe this is the best one of all of them. http://www.amazon.com/Field-Guide-Ca...der_0760331928 Go to this link and you can see sample pages as well as many photos from the book. I think it would be the perfect book for the purpose you are wanting it for.
